MY FLOW NAPKINS

(Women and Menstrual Pads)

As a woman, I take pride in keeping myself clean, especially when ‘the Great Flood cometh’ every month. Yes, I’m talking about that messy, monthly thing we have going on for us girls.

To be honest, I never thought much about disposable menstrual pads. I just used them because they were convenient, affordable, and somewhat reliable. It wasn't until I found out about the My Flow Napkins that I realized I had a better, 'earth-friendlier' alternative to them.

I found out that reusable sanitary pads were the best option. And here's why...

You're doing our planet a favor.

According to one source, women throw away as much as 300 pounds of menstrual products in her lifetime. That's a lot! And these wastes contain micro plastic: the remains of plastic garbage that aren't disposed of properly.

Microplasticmakes their way into our coastal waters, damaging our planet and harming aquatic creatures. I also found out that a quarter of our fish now have these plastic particles. This proves how detrimental plastic wastes are to us and the planet.

Most reusable pads contain natural fibers that decompose faster than synthetics. Cloth menstrual pads made from bamboo, for example, are a great environmental choice. Bamboo has wood-like properties, can grow as fast as three feet per day (wow!), and will spread on its own. Also, they can thrive almost anywhere. Isn't that just awesome?

Disposables like maxi pads and tampons build up a lot of moisture. And as you all know, moisture is the favorite breeding ground for bacteria. It's easy to develop a yeast infection. What is scarier is the connection between Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and the use of super-absorbent tampons. HALF of all known cases of TSS links to tampon use. In severe cases, this complication can lead to death!

The chemicals in tampons and disposable pads are also linked to ovarian and cervical cancer. To give you an idea of how seriously I took this information, my aunt had ovarian cancer. Doctors told her it was from the excessive use of disposable pantyliners. I've never touched a pantyliner since.

With reusable sanitary pads, you won't have to worry about moisture buildup, TSS, or cancer. They breathe easier and are, therefore, better for your feminine parts.

Great for sensitive skin types.

Cloth menstrual pads are thicker. But they're also cooler, 'breathable', and more gentle on women's sensitive areas. That's because most cloth pads come from natural cotton fabrics or organic materials.

And those harmful chemicals I mentioned? Most of them come from fragrances companies put in the product. And they are notorious for causing skin irritations. With reusable cloth sanitary pads, you're saying goodbye to dermatitis and hello to healthy, undamaged skin.

Stops exposure to chemical by products and GMOs.

Did you know that the 'clean' look of commercial hygiene products come from chlorine? That's why disposable pads are so white. But chlorine is NOT good for women's private areas. They can cause contact dermatitis, which can lead to an inflammation of the vulva, or vulvitis.

Another alarming fact is the link between commercial hygiene products and GMOs.

USDA explains how a whopping 94% of all cotton planted in the US is genetically engineered. GMOs have a bad reputation of causing many health problems. That includes allergies and leaky gut syndrome. Moreover, cotton crops contain pesticides. So we can assume that there are harmful residues in commercial pads as well.

What does a commercial sanitary pad contain?

Reusable menstrual pads can be expensive, but the materials used are more sustainable. They're not meant for one-time use. In fact, new cloth pads can last up to FIVE YEARS before they need replacing.

Periods are costly, but reusable sanitary pads let you spend less and save more. So, while the initial cost is steep, it is a much cheaper alternative to buying maxi pads.

Stop using commercial menstrual products. Switch to reusable sanitary pads.

Our planet and our lives depend on the choices we make. Why not choose eco-friendly alternatives that create a better world for us and our grandkids?

This isn't just about menstrual pads. This is about change; a change that is long overdue. The good news is that it's not too late, and we can still do something TODAY.
